As an artist I strive to support women’s rights in every arena. My design suggests the colorful variations of women marathoners and how they are woven together in their passion for running.
Throughout history, women were barred from competing in long-distance races, including the prestigious Boston Marathon. The misguided belief at the time was that endurance running was detrimental to women's “fragile” constitution and could harm their reproductive capabilities. Pioneering female runners refused to be sidelined. In 1966 Bobbi Gibb became the first woman to challenge the system by running the marathon unofficially. The following year, Kathrine Switzer took the fight a step further, running under the name K. V. Switzer. A race official tried to physically remove her from the course, but she made it to the finish line with the help of her running partners. The efforts of these brave and determined trailblazers paved the way for future generations of female runners in Boston and worldwide.
The names that are highlighted throughout the artwork honors the women that challenged the long-standing misconceptions about female endurance and championed their right to gender equality. I am awed by their strength and courage and grateful to have the opportunity to bring to them the attention they have long deserved.
