Spinning Wheels-Patricia Salomon Image
The artist's inspiration for the design of "Spinning Wheels" was thoughts of how hard the wheelchair participants must train to complete in the Boston Marathon. The strength they need to develop in their upper bodies to spin the wheels over and over for 26 miles, up and down hills and on the straightaways, must be grueling.  Their hands and wrists alone must take an unimaginable beating.

The design itself shows the different types of wheels found on wheelchairs, sitting on many vertical lines in many different colors. The wheels represent all the wheelchair participants who are in a chair for various reasons, spinning over and over, as they make their way through the course. The repeating vertical lines represent mile after mile, one in front of the other, that make up the course of the Boston Marathon. The combination of the elements of wheels and colored vertical lines illustrate the constant movement achieved by the participants.

I honor the wheelchair participants for their courage, strength, and will, that places them in this Marathon.  Their fortitude is awe-inspiring.
